Health authorities warn of rapid spread of Tinea infections

COLOMBO (News1st); Dermatologists have warned that Tinea infections which is a skin disease is currently spreading rapidly in Sri Lanka.

Dermatologist at the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Janaka Akarawita said the disease is reported among adults and children.

He said itching is one of the main symptoms, along with a scaly rash that is shaped like a ring.

Dr. Akarawita said the infection is most commonly seen in areas prone to sweating, such as armpits, feet and the scalp.

He added that it spreads through contact, and may spread among colleagues.

Dermatologist Dr. Indira Kahawita said regular treatment from a qualified doctor is necessary to control the disease.

Dr. Kahawita said if the rash is only visible in one or two spots seeking medical attention from the family doctor is sufficient adding however if the treatment does not cure the rash to seek medical attention from a dermatologist at the nearest state hospital.
