COLOMBO (News 1st); Jagath Priyankara was sworn in as the new parliamentary representative for the Puttalam district.
He took the oath of office in front of the Speaker, filling the seat left vacant by the untimely demise of State Minister Sanath Nishantha, who tragically passed away in an accident.
The Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna had previously secured five parliamentary seats from the Puttalam district in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
The late Sanath Nishantha had topped the preference list, followed by Piyankara Jayaratne, Arundika Fernando, Chinthaka Amal Mayadunna, and Ashoka Priyantha.
Jagath Priyankara, who was next on the preference list, had received a significant 40,527 preferential votes.
His swearing-in marks the official transfer of the seat previously held by Sanath Nishantha.
Priyankara is also the Puttalam district leader of the National Freedom Front, a party led by Wimal Weerawansa.
