Roads in several districts inundated

COLOMBO (News 1st); Roads in several districts have been inundated owing to heavy rains, causing disruptions to vehicular movement.

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Coordinating Unit of the Kalutara District Lt. Col. Aravinda Amarasekara said two sluice gates of the Kukule Ganga Reservoir have been opened due to the prevailing showers, releasing 110 cubic meters per second.

Lt. Col. Aravinda Amarasekara said many main roads and byroads including the Bulathsinhala-Molkawa road, Baduraliya-Kalawana road, Walallavita-Avittawa road, Kitulgalwala-Galalamulla road and Kolamadiriya-Millaniya road have been inundated.

Several roads have been inundated with the overflowing of the Gin River.

The District DMC Unit said several roads in Matara district have also been inundated with the Nilwala river overflowing.

Engineer in charge of the reservoir Krishantha Dias said one sluice gate of the Polgolla reservoir remains open due to the prevailing showers.

1,200 cubic feet per second will be released into the Victoria Reservoir through the Mahaweli River.

He added that 1,000 cubic feet per second will be released through a tunnel to the Bowatenna reservoir.
