Ruling party MPs in NY with President: Sajith asks WHY?

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's opposition leader raised concerns in parliament on Thursday (21) over the fact that ruling party MPs were accompanying the President to the UN General Assembly in New York, instead of high-ranking government officials.

He said given that Sri Lanka is currently experiencing a financial crisis, it is amusing that public funds are being wasted on 'MPs who bankrupted the nation'.

Chief Government Whip & Minister Prasanna Ranatunga termed the opposition leader's comments as 'nonsense' (Pissu Kelinawa), urging that the Sajith Premadasa should stick to the agenda of the day, which is to debate the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

'So speaking about MPs who bankrupted the country heading to the UN is nonsense," responded Premadasa while raising concern over the participation of ruling party MPs at the UNGA with the President.

"You can go to the UN separately, when you become the President," said the speaker to end the heated exchange between the ruling faction and the opposition.
