Colombo (News 1st): Former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal has been summoned today before the Parliamentary Select Committee of Parliament to Investigate Causes for Financial Bankruptcy.

Its chairman, Member of Parliament Sagara Kariyawasam said, in addition, Member of Parliament Vajira Abeywardena has also been called before the committee today.

Sagara Kariyawasam stated that it is planned to obtain evidence from them regarding the issues that led to the bankruptcy of the economy.

Meanwhile, the study of the reports presented by economists attached to universities will also be conducted simultaneously.

University economists have pointed out in relevant reports that several factors including the reduction of taxes after Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's appointment as President had led to the economic crisis.

They also pointed out that the contraction of the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic, the unlimited issuance of sovereign bonds by the government, and adapting to a consumer economy led to the economic crisis.

Sagara Kariyawasam added that these findings will form the basis of the committee's upcoming determinations
