Measures taken to contain Meningococcal outbreak at Galle Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st); Dr. G. Wijesuriya, Sri Lanka's Deputy Director General of Health Services, revealed an outbreak of meningococcal disease among inmates at the Galle Prison.

He said all necessary measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

An outbreak of meningococcal disease resulted in the deaths of two inmates at Galle Prison recently.

Dr. G. Wijesuriya, Sri Lanka's Deputy Director General of Health Services, said that another seven inmates were moved to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for treatment, and two of them were discharged.

Authorities have taken measures to test the inmates who were released from prison, and all those with whom they had contact.

The Prisons Department said that inmates directed to the Galle Prison by the court will be moved to the Angunukolapelessa Prison as a precautionary measure.

The Prisons Spokesperson said that judicial matters will take place via video conference technology, and the moving of prisoners out of the prison was suspended for a period of two weeks.
