Sri Lanka renewed its role as hub for cooperation, says US envoy

COLOMBO (News 1st); US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said that Sri Lanka while on the path to recovery, has renewed its role as a hub for international and regional cooperation.  

Sri Lanka Navy is co-hosting the Indo-Pacific Environmental Security Forum with the Australian Defense Force; and Arizona State University’s Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory, US lndo- Pacific Command (INDOPACOM), and Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG).

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung said that Sri Lanka has committed to strong steps towards environmental security in many ways, from committing to the Global Methane Pledge to more focus on renewable energy and conservation. 

She said the US vision of the world is one where all countries, big and small, have opportunities for success and stability.  

While noting that droughts in Sri Lanka are impacting food security, the US Ambassador said that it is imperative that everyone comes together to share ideas and find creative ways to address these common challenges.  

She said the Indo Pacific Environmental Security Forum will support governments and defense forces in planning and operating in an environmentally sustainable manner, build regional cooperation, and develop resilient communities and practices.

The four-day forum (from 14th to 17th August) is also attended by senior military personnel and top-level environmentalists in the Indo-Pacific region.
