Colombo (News 1st) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump was indicted on criminal charges late Monday by a Grand Jury in the state of Georgia for involvement in an attempt to tamper with the result in the 2020 Presidential Election in the state, U.S. media reported.
The Grand Jury affirmed all 41 criminal indictments sought by District Attorney Fani Willis in Atlanta, the state's capital, including forgery and racketeering. Trump's team allegedly illegally accessed the voting system after the election. Recordings have surfaced of Trump ordering his officials to 'find' 11,780 votes in Georga after the election, the additional number he needed to win.
The win in Georgia took current President Joe Biden over the threshold of votes required for victory. Victory in Georgia was crucial as it is the 8th largest of the 50 U.S. states by population.
The Georgia indictments are the latest in Trump's legal woes this year. He has already been charged with conspiracy to overturn the election in a federal court in Washington DC over the mob attack on the US Capital on January 6, 2021. He is also facing charges in another federal court in Florida over the mishandling of classified documents related to national security. He is also indicted by the state of New York in criminal fraud over his campaign funds. Trump has entered pleas of not guilty to all those charges.
Trump is running for president once again in the 2024 election and is the frontrunner among candidates from the Republican Party, one of the country’s two main parties. Ironically, a criminal conviction would not prevent him from running and even taking office as president once again.
