COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has raised concerns about the limited water capacity of the Udawalawe Reservoir, indicating that it can sustain the region's water needs for just three days.

Currently, the reservoir holds approximately 5,000 acre feet of water.

On Saturday (12), around 2,300 acre feet of water were released from the Samanala Wewa Reservoir to the Udawalawa Reservoir. Additionally, water was directed to Mayurapura and Suriyawewa areas via the Left Bank Canal in the evening on the same day.

In an effort to manage the situation, the Mahaweli Authority has scheduled the release of water to Agunukolapalassa through the South Canal until Monday(14).
