COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has instructed the senior ranks of Sri Lanka Police to take strict action to combat the trend of assassinations taking place in the Western and Southern Provinces in the country.

The minister had instructed the country's police chief to take strict action over homicides.

The Minister had also instructed to declare a general amnesty until the 31st of July to surrender unregistered weapons, and weapons for which licenses have expired.

Thereafter, police officers are expected to commence raids to trace and seize illegal firearms.

The Inspector General of Police had noted that homicides are on the rise in the Southern and Western Provinces, due to the inefficiencies of the senior police officers assigned to those provinces.

The Minister had instructed to remove such police officers immediately, and replace them with suitable personnel.
