X-Press Pearl case to be taken up at Singapore Court on Monday (15)

COLOMBO (News 1st); The case filed by Sri Lanka at a Singapore court seeking compensation for the environmental damage caused due to the X-Press Pearl disaster is scheduled to be called again on Monday (15).

A Singapore law firm is due to appear for the case representing Sri Lanka.

The case was taken up before a Singapore court for the first time on the 9th of May.

The Attorney General's Department filed a lawsuit before a Singapore court seeking compensation for the environmental damage caused by the X-Press Pearl vessel on the 26th of April.

The fire that broke out onboard the X-Press Pearl vessel which was sailing under the Singapore flag on the 20th of May, 2021, had a severe impact on the Sea of Sri Lanka.

The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) said measures have been taken to reassess the damage caused by the X-Press Pearl vessel that caught fire in the Sea of Sri Lanka.

MEPA Chairman Attorney Asela B. Rekawa said the report is being formulated based on the directives of the Attorney General's Department.
