SriLankan Airlines Catering Company Employee apprehended after attempting to Smuggle Gold at the BIA

A SriLankan Airlines Catering Company employee faces arrest after being apprehended yesterday afternoon by the Customs Narcotics Control Unit. 

The 35-year-old resident of Kiribathgoda attempted to smuggle 66 gold biscuits, weighing a staggering 7.7 kilograms, through the departure terminal staff gate at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Customs Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda says the suspect tried to smuggle the gold by Using a special heater concealed in his innerwear, the individual prepared the gold biscuits into two separate parcels, presumably to bypass security checks. 

According to News 1st correspondents, Initial investigations indicate the suspect received the gold from an unidentified individual within a canteen located at the immigration passenger terminal. 

The motive and intended recipient of the smuggled gold remain under investigation by the BIA customs officials.
