COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Irrigation said a study was launched to assess if the salinity barrier across the Nilwala river, which has led to much controversy, has in fact affected the water levels receding following floods.

The Department said further measures will be taken based on the results.

With the prevailing showers many areas in Akuressa, Kamburupitiya, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Matara and Thihagoda Divisional Secretariats of the Matara District were inundated.

The people said they are helpless as the water level has remained the same for more than 12 days, unlike previous times.

They added that the water levels are not receding due to the salinity barrier.

The salinity barrier project, which was proposed in 2003, commenced in 2012 and was completed in 2022.

Its primary purpose was to prevent saltwater from mixing with the river and causing a drinking water crisis.

The preparation and development of the salinity barrier of the Nilwala River has been discussed by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Food Security and Agriculture.

A decision has been reached to summon all relevant parties before the committee on a future date to reach a final decision in this regard.

All schools in the Matara district will remain closed on Friday (06) as well due to floods.
