Colombo (News 1st) - Asia Pacific Alliance For Disaster Management (A-PAD) Sri Lanka facilitated a workshop to formulate protocols and Standard Operation Procedures for Swiftwater Search and Rescue in partnership with the Disaster Management Centre.
One hundred and sixty-two personnel from the private sector and military have been trained by Japan A-PAD International trainers to-date. These personnel can be effectively deployed prior to impending disasters in coordination to mitigate and respond timely.
A core group of the trained personnel shared best practices, challenges and partnerships to frame protocols for early deployment of swiftwater rescuers and resources in partnership with DMC to complement government efforts. The private sector can be an integral part of this initiative in saving lives, businesses, and communities.
Major General (Retd) Sudantha Ranasinghe, the Director General of DMC, Ms. Anoja Seneviratne - Director Mitigation, Research and Development DMC, Mr. Janath Hettiarachchi of WFP, Ms. Vajini Herat Gunaratne of World Bank assisted the workshop as observers.
A-PAD will formulate protocols and SOPs for efficient and effective preparedness in Search and Rescue with civil-military coordination action in saving lives.
