Over 5000 affected due to adverse weather, DMC says

COLOMBO (News 1st); The water level of the Kuda Ganga, a tributary of the Kalu River, has exceeded the ‘flood level’ in Millakanda.

The high flood level of the Millakanda gauge is 8 meters. However, 8.68 meters were recorded at about 3 am today.

The Department of Irrigation warns that the Kalu Ganga in Putupaula is at a minor flood level.

The Gin river has exceeded the minor flood level in Baddegama.

The Nilwala river in Panadugama and Thalgahagoda is also at a minor flood level.

The Attanagalu Oya has exceeded the minor flood level.

The people in these areas to be vigilant, Director of Irrigation at the Hydrology & Disaster Management Division at the Irrigation Department S.P.C. Sugeeshwara warned/

Meanwhile, 5,051 people belonging to 1,275 families have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather.

316 house have been damaged, The Disaster Management Centre said.

Landslide warnings have also been issued for several areas across seven districts.

These include divisional secretariats in the Galle, Matara, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kandy, Kalutara, and Hambantota districts.

The Met Department predicts that the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North-Western provinces may experience thunderstorms today.
