Peru's attorney general launches genocide probe on President Dina Boluarte for killing of 40 protesters

Colombo (News 1st) - Peru's attorney general has launched a genocide investigation against the country's current President for the killing of 40 protesters opposing her appointment to the presidency by parliament and demanding an election, foreign media reported.

President Dina Boluarte was appointed by a vote of Parliament on December 7, 2022, hours after the house impeached her predecessor Pedro Castillo, who was then placed under arrest for attempting to illegally dissolve parliament and install a 'government of emergency'.

Her appointment has been met with massive nationwide protests by supporters of Castillo who are demanding his release and frsh polls. Police have fired upon the crowds of protesters on several occasions in different towns.

The attorney general is also investigating then Prime Minister Alberto Otarolla, who has since resigned, and the two Ministers of Defence and the Interior, on the same allegations of genocide.
