India win 1st ODI by 67 runs despite Dasun Shanaka century

Colombo (News 1st) - India won game one of the three match ODI series against Sri Lanka depsite some late heroics by Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka in Guwahati, India.

After the visitors won the toss and chose to field, the home side got off to a blistering start with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill putting on 143 for the first wicket. The partnership was broken when Gill was dismissed for 70 in the 20th over. Sharma was later dismissed for 83.

The prolific Virat Kohli notched yet another ODI century: his 44th. He made 113 off 87 balls helping India post a mammoth 373/7. For the Lankans, Kasun Rajitha picked up 3 wickets for 88 runs off his 10 overs.

The Sri Lankan chase got off to a poor start. They lost their first two wickets in just the first six overs. At the 14 over mark, the scorecard read 64 for 3. Pathum Nissanka scored 72 and put on a partnership of 72 runs with Dananjaya De Silva, before De Silva was dismissed for 47 runs.

Sri Lanka looked down and out when the scorecard read 206/8 in 37.5 overs, until the Shanaka decided to take matters into his own hands and put on a show to score his 2nd ODI hundred. He scored a 108 off 88 balls, a knock which included 12 boundaries and 3 sixes. But this was not enough and his side ended on 306/8 in their 50 overs.

The series now moves to the Eden Gardens on Thursday (12).
