Colombo Court sentences man to 10 years in prison for siphoning doctors' salaries in 2003

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A Sri Lankan Court on Monday (5) sentenced a management assistant attached to the Salary Division of the Colombo National Hospital to six years of rigorous imprisonment, and another four in prison.

The accused was found guilty on two counts of fraudulently diverting the salaries of four doctors to a separate bank account.

The accused W. W. Krishantha Fernando has committed fraud while serving as the Management Assistant of the Salary Division of the Colombo National Hospital.

Colombo High Court Judge Amal Rajaraja also ordered the accused to pay a fine which is thrice the amount that he defrauded.

However, the accused pleading guilty to both counts had informed the court that he is not in a position to pay the fine of Rs. 16.6 Million.

This crime was committed in 2003, and the Attorney General filed a case in 2006, and the evidence examination commenced in 2010.

Counsel appearing for the accused told the court that a group was involved in the criminal act, and the Attorney General had only filed the case against his client.
