COLOMBO (News 1st); The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a response to the Government of Pakistan’s announcement instructing its national cricket team to selectively participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The ICC noted that it is still awaiting official communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), but emphasized that the government’s position is fundamentally at odds with the values and structure of global cricket tournaments.

The ICC underscored that the very premise of a world tournament depends on all qualified teams competing on equal terms, following the event schedule set for all participating nations.

ICC tournaments are built on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness, and selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of the competitions, it added.

While acknowledging that governments have authority over broader national policy decisions, the ICC cautioned that this particular move is “not in the interest of the global game.”

The ICC encouraged the PCB to carefully weigh the long-term implications for Pakistani cricket, warning that the decision could have far-reaching repercussions within the wider cricket ecosystem, which Pakistan is both a beneficiary and a key member of.

It urged the PCB to engage actively in finding a “mutually acceptable resolution” that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders, including fans, players, and other cricketing nations.

The ICC reiterated that its top priority remains the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, a responsibility shared collectively by all member nations, including Pakistan.
