Ministry of Education Launches "Prathishta" Project for School Restoration

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Education has announced the launch of project "Prathishta", a programme to restore schools damaged by the recent disaster.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Nalaka Kaluwewa, says that any organisation, group, or individual can contribute towards rebuilding the school system.

He added that plans have been made to carry out all necessary coordination through the Ministry of Education and for those seeking information or wishing to contribute, the Ministry has introduced a dedicated hotline, 1988, alongside two specific WhatsApp numbers: 07765 823 65 and 071 99 323 25.

Accordingly, All activities related to this will be coordinated by the Ministry of Education's Disaster Management Committee.

According to the Ministry of Education over 1506 schools across the island have been impacted by the recent disaster.

The most severe damage was reported in the Northern Province, where 330 schools were affected.

Significant impacts were also recorded in the Western Province with 266 schools damaged, the Eastern Province with 221, and both the Central and North Western Provinces, each reporting damage to 136 schools. Furthermore, 129 schools in the Uva Province and 115 schools in the Sabaragamuwa Province were impacted.

However, the Ministry of Education stated that this list is still being updated.

The Ministry confirmed that two schools located in the Badulla District have been completely destroyed.
