IAF MI-17 V5 Helicopters Depart After Saving Lives

COLOMBO (News 1st);The Indian Air Force (IAF) concluded its critical disaster relief operations in Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, marking a significant chapter in regional humanitarian cooperation.

On 06 December 2025, the first MI-17 V5 helicopter deployed by the IAF departed the island after completing its mission.

The second aircraft followed suit Monday morning (08 December 2025), officially ending the IAF’s air support operations conducted in close coordination with the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

During their deployment, the MI-17 V5 helicopters became lifelines for thousands of affected Sri Lankans.

They executed high-stakes humanitarian airlift missions, transporting essential relief supplies to isolated communities, evacuating stranded civilians, and providing aerial support to rescue teams operating in severely impacted regions.

Their swift and strategic intervention significantly strengthened Sri Lanka’s national disaster response during a period of urgent need.

The farewell ceremonies reflected the deep gratitude and camaraderie forged during the mission.

Air Vice Marshal Dammika Dias, Director General Air Operations of the SLAF, personally bid farewell to the first aircraft. Monday morning, a group of senior SLAF officers gathered to see off the second helicopter and convey heartfelt appreciation to the IAF aircrew for their dedication, professionalism, and seamless cooperation throughout the operation.
