President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has accepted the resignation of Asoka Ranwala from the post of the Speaker.
This was informed by the President's Secretary to the Secretary General of parliament.
Asoka Ranwala, issuing a statement yesterday, announced his resignation from the post of Speaker of Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the Parliament has announced that a new Speaker will be elected on the 17th of December to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Asoka Ranwala.
Parliament Secretary General Kushani Rohandheera says that this will take place after the national list MPs are sworn in.
The national list MPs will take their oaths before the Deputy Speaker.
Subsequently, the letter sent by Asoka Ranwala, who resigned from the position of Speaker, will be presented to the Parliament by the Secretary General.
Following this, the new Speaker will be elected based on the constitutional procedure and the proposals from the MPs.
The Parliament is scheduled to convene once again on the 17th and 18th of December.
