Supreme Court to Hear Petition Against Appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as IGP

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Supreme Court today granted the request of Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle to allow time to ascertain the position of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police. 

This request was made during the hearing of a petition filed by eight parties including Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, challenging the appointment.

The petition was heard before a Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Achala Wengappuli, and Mahinda Samayawardhena. 

Respondents named in the case include the Speaker, members of the Constitutional Council, Deshabandu Tennakoon, and the Attorney General.

The Court has scheduled the next hearing for February 24 and 25.
