COLOMBO (News 1st); A discussion regarding the reopening of the renovated Mahawa-Anuradhapura railway line is scheduled to take place today.
The meeting will be chaired by K.D.S. Ruwan Chandra, Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Aviation.
Senior officials from the Department of Railways are expected to participate in the discussion.
Although the Mahawa-Anuradhapura railway line has been modernized with Indian credit assistance, train operations have been hindered due to delays in upgrading the signaling system.
However, a test train was operated yesterday to educate drivers on how to safely navigate railway crossings under the current conditions.
Secretary K.D.S. Ruwan Chandra expressed confidence that, following the discussion, steps could be taken to resume at least a few train services through the Mahawa-Anuradhapura section promptly.
