COLOMBO (News 1st) Sri Lanka's hard-won victory against measles seems under threat as the Ministry of Health reported an increase in cases across nine districts.
This development comes as a surprise, as the World Health Organization declared Sri Lanka measles-free in 2019.
The Ministry addressed the situation in a recent press conference, highlighting the importance of awareness and prevention measures.
Dr. Channada Silva, a specialist at the Lady of Ridgeway Children's Hospital, explained the symptoms of measles, including fever, rash, cough, and runny nose.
He also warned of potential complications like seizures, brain damage, and diarrhea, especially in young children and infants under one year old.
Health officials identified vaccine hesitancy and low vaccination rates as primary factors contributing to the measles resurgence.
Dr. Silva reiterated that measles is easily preventable with the existing vaccine, with an additional dose administered to children at six months old.
The Ministry of Health is urging all parents and guardians to ensure their children are vaccinated against measles as per the recommended schedule.
