No LG Election Before Presidential Poll

COLOMBO (News 1st); Mahinda Deshapriya, the former Chairman of the Election Commission, has expressed his views on the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the postponement of the Local Government Elections. 

He emphasized that the Supreme Court has, on several occasions, declared that not holding an election violates the fundamental rights of the people.

Deshapriya described the Supreme Court's recent ruling as "delayed justice," noting that if the decision had been made earlier in the year, the Local Government Elections could have been held and concluded by now.

He pointed out that there is no possibility of conducting the Local Government Election before the upcoming Presidential Poll.

However, Deshapriya mentioned that it is feasible for the Election Commission to schedule the Local Government Election after the Presidential Election, before the end of the year.
