COLOMBO (News 1st); The government of Sri Lanka presented a detailed report to the Supreme Court today, outlining the measures undertaken to combat climate change.
This submission responds to an order from the court, prompted by a petition filed by the
Center For Environmental Justice.
The petition alleged that the government had failed to implement adequate measures to address climate change, thereby violating basic human rights.
The matter was reviewed by the Supreme Court Bench, comprising Justices Murdhu Fernando and Mahinda Samayawardena.
During a previous hearing, Attorney-at-Law Ravindranath Dabare, the counsel for the petitioner, argued that the government's efforts to mitigate climate change were insufficient.
In light of these concerns, the judges directed the Attorney General to compile and submit a report detailing the government's climate action initiatives.
Today, the bench instructed the petitioner to review the Attorney General's report and submit their observations by August 1st.
