COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police has launched a special operation to curb the harassment of children and women in public transport.
The Police Media Unit said 42 people were arrested in connection with the operations carried out on buses on Wednesday (07).
The measure was taken based on orders by the Acting Inspector General of Police due to complaints received daily regarding sexual harassment of women and children.
Police officers in civilian clothing will be deployed in public transport services, prioritizing peak time, between 8am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm.
Police teams will be deployed in buses, bus depots, railway stations and congested areas during this period.
The Police Headquarters added that Police officers in uniform have also been stationed covering the main roads, to assist officers in civilian clothes.
