Spain's 'La Roja' subdue England's 'Lionesses' to win the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Spain won their first FIFA Women's World Cup, defeating England 1-0 in the Final on Sunday (20).

The eyes of the football world were on the Olympic Park in Sydney on Sunday (20) as Spain took on England in the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023.

England boss Sarina Wiegman fielded the same line-up that started the semi-final against co-hosts Australia, with Ella Toone preferred over Lauren James, available following suspension.

Spain meanwhile had benched two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas with former professional sprinter Salma Paralluelo leading the line.

Both teams started the match with an attacking spirit, with Lauren Hemp attempting the first shot of the game and rattling the crossbar minutes later.

England's goalkeeper Mary Earps was called into action shortly after when Spain's Alba Redondo's backpost shot was saved.

Spain took the lead at the half hour mark when Olga Carmona scored with a guided shot to the bottom right corner.

England's best chance to equalise came just before halftime, but Ella Toone was unable to convert a cross from Alessia Russo.

Spain started the second half with the same intensity and were awarded a penalty in the 67 minute when Keira Walsh was penalised for a handball after a VAR check.

However, Jenni Hermoso failed to capitalise on the opportunity to double Spain's lead as her penalty was saved by the England shotstopper.

Despite England pushing for an equaliser with 13 minutes of added time confirmed, they failed to breach Spain's defence handing 'La Roja' their maiden Women's World Cup title.
