Prisoners sent to Matara Prison to be transferred

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Prisons said the prisoners brought to the Matara Prison will be transferred to the Angunakolapelessa Prison, due to the risk of brain fever spreading at the Matara Prison.

A decision was reached to provide antibiotics for brain fever to other prisons suspected to be at risk.

Director of Prison Health Services Dr. Hemantha Ranasinghe said the programme will be implemented soon.

He said the antibiotics for brain fever were given to the inmates and officials of the Matara Prison as well.

Drug addicts are the most common victims of the disease.

Of the biosamples obtained from several inmates who are sick at the Matara Prison, one biosample was confirmed to have brain fever.
