Colombo (News 1st) - Actress Kim Kardashian successfully outbid several other people at a Sotheby’s auction in London on Wednesday (18th) and walked away with the 103-year-old Attallah Cross, made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales, the only person ever to wear it, Sotheby’s announced.
Kardashian purchased the cross, which has diamonds and amethysts set in gold and silver, for USD 200,000, double what it had been priced at by Sotheby’s.
It has only been worn by the glamourous Princess Diana, who had a particular fondness for it. A photo of Diana wearing the cross with a black and purple Catherine Walker dress in 1987 was splashed around the world on TV and in print media.
It was made by Garrard, jewelers to the royal court, but was never worn until after it was sold in the 1980s by Garrard to a friend of Diana, businessman Naim Attallah. Attallah loaned it on several occasions to Diana for her to wear at gala events, according to Sotheby’s.
The cross features square-cut amethysts decorated with circular-cut diamonds in a flowery design. It is 5.4 inches by 3.7 inches and has a total diamond weight of 5.25 carats.
Diana was one of the most glamorous ever members of the British royal family. She married then-Prince Charles in 1981 in a fairytale wedding and won the hearts and minds of millions the world over for her charity work. But they divorced in 1996 and she died in a controversial car crash in Paris a year later.
